Frequently Asked Questions About Direct Primary Care

Confused about how DPC programs can help members? Here are some of the most commonly asked questions.

Is Direct Primary Care an Insurance Product?

No, Direct Primary Care programs are not insurance. DPC uses a membership payment model – an innovative alternative payment model that consists of a flat and affordable membership fee.

This membership provides unlimited access to health care services provided by a DPC provider's Physician Network but does not include coverages such as hospitalization or critical illness.

Does Direct Primary Care cover hospital care or specialty care?

Direct Primary Care memberships do not include inpatient or outpatient hospital services. While some accept disease states within manageable ranges, they do not provide specialty care outside of partner-physician clinics. If a member currently sees a specialist for an advanced disease state, it is not recommended to leave that specialist.

How do you use a DPC program?

The first step is always to call the dedicated concierge phone line. Based on symptoms and urgency, the team will provide direct primary care options of either a virtual consult or an in-office appointment within the network of providers through the Direct Primary Care program.

The concierge team will schedule the appointment and let the member know about the details. Members are responsible for the visit fees associated with their care at the time of the appointment.

The network physician will treat the member during the appointment and prescribe generic medication if needed.

Does a DPC program work with traditional health insurance?

Direct Primary Care is a great complement to traditional insurance healthcare plans. Through Direct Primary Care’s alternative payment model, all services offered by the membership are deflected from the insurance plan.

With virtual care services and unlimited physician visits, this can help reduce the out-of-pocket costs associated with a traditional health plan. And if you have a high deductible associated with a traditional health plan, no need to wait to satisfy that deductible before visiting a doctor when you have a DPC plan.

Do Direct Primary Care Programs Provide 1095 Forms?

No, Direct Primary Care (DPC) programs generally do not provide 1095 tax forms because they are not considered insurance or Minimum Essential Coverage (MEC) under the Affordable Care Act. DPC is a medical service contract, not a health insurance plan.
